Reader Friendly: Mirror's Edge: Exordium

Remember when I made that piece that compared the two Mirror's Edge games, the underrated first person game series set in a dystopian society where everything is either white, red, blue or orange. Well to promote the 2016 game Mirror's Edge: Catalyst, Dark Horse published a prequel comic about how Faith ended up in juvie.

It's a decent read, it's elaborates on events that happened before Catalyst, like how did the rift between Faith and Noah, how did she work with Dogen and as mentioned before what was the reason she was put in jail. It was released before Catalyst so this is a showcase of what's going to be in the game, which is what most video game tie-in comics mostly do, so if you wanting to read more about Mirror's Edge then maybe give it a pass, unless your a big fan of the games.

The main conflict that kickstarts the plot is that Faith is wanting do more as a young and eager runner and it's one of those angsty teen stories where the main character falls in with the wrong crowd, i.e. Dogen, who gives her runner jobs that are a dubious on the moral side of things. One of the jobs was that Faith has to steal a cure for cancer, but someone else has stolen it, Celeste, a character from the original game.

Now I love this bit of the comic, in this version we have a good set up and build up for there relationship in the comic and we get a good backstory for Celeste which she didn't have in the original game. In the comic it's revealed Celeste has a younger sister whose got lymphoma and that was the motivation for her stealing what Faith was going to steal in an earlier issue and this does lead to an interesting inversion to the betrayal where Faith is the one betraying her and thus she learns a lesson and that does lead into her character in Catalyst which is cool.

The art in the comics looks good, has a very good style to it, another thing I love seeing other people who isn't a runner or a henchmen you have to fight, it lends it to more funny scenes.

Mirror's Edge: Exordium is a tie-in comic that serves as a great expansion for an underrated game, if you enjoyed the games then check it out. It's available wherever any books, graphic novels and other paraphernalia are sold.
