Reader Friendly: Event Leviathan #1 Review

Brian Michael Bendis is one of the writers currently working in comics whose name carries a weight to it. Wherever it's a good weight or a bad weight is up to interpretation. While he was man who created characters like Miles Morales and Jessica Jones, he did also write Civil War II and messed up the X-Men books. I honestly like him as a writer, I'm enjoying his Young Justice series and I like his Action Comics run and his first event storyline for DC spins out of that title.

Event Leviathan, despite it's odd name offers an interesting premise. A organisation named Leviathan, a very underused organization which has gotten a lot of push recently, has been taking out nearly every spy organization in the world and have taken Superman hostage. There was a special one-shot issue to set up event, that I didn't read. It did set up some story elements, but it also set up other titles related to Superman. The first issue of this series, is just a recap of events to keep the random so and so who picked it up informed. While it does offer in little of the way of action, it does give an interesting set up.

The main characters we're following are Batman, Green Arrow, Lois Lane, Steve Trevor and the Question and it seems to be up for them to save the day. That is an interesting premise, these are characters that are better suited for Bendis' talents as a writer and I hope we get to see more interaction between them. The art in this book is done by long time Bendis collaborator is Alex Maleev and his art looks great, it blends with Bendis' writing style and does tell the story without much dialogue in some scenes. A minor nitpick I do have is that I had a hard time following the dialogue boxes, but I think that's a me problem.

In the end while the first issue doesn't move the plot along, it does act as a great playbill telling the reader whose involved and what we're were getting.
